Rediscover the NES with the TinyNES: A Real Nintendo Experience in a Compact Package
What if you could have an original Nintendo Entertainment System, but in a tiny, cool form factor? The NES, that iconic 8-bit cartridge-based game machine, has been captivating gamers for nearly 40 years. Now, imagine a classic alternative that's not just a cheap clone but built with genuine chips from a real original Nintendo! Introducing the TinyNES—small in size, big in nostalgia.
The Authentic TinyNES Experience
TinyNES isn't just another retro clone; it boasts real Nintendo chips, all neatly socketed and primed for teardown and review. This compact console offers an authentic NES experience in a miniature package, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts alike. But there's a catch—creating a console with super rare RGB variants of real Nintendo chips led to some design challenges. Specifically, the addition of sockets to the board caused issues that need to be addressed with a jumper board installation. Don't worry; we've got that covered too.
The RGB Chip Conundrum
If you're looking to capture game footage with better video quality, prepare for a challenge. The RGB chips necessary for this are currently unavailable, even on eBay. The only way to obtain them is by desoldering them from the main board of arcade machines like the Nintendo VS. System and PlayChoice-10, or the rare Japan-exclusive Famicom Titler console from Sharp. Compatible chip numbers include all variants of RP2C03, RC2C03, and RC2C05. While RP2C04 chips are technically supported, their output isn't ideal, so it's best to avoid them.
The Reality Check
Let's face it: acquiring these components is a Herculean task. But don't be discouraged! The TinyNES console itself is a marvel of retro gaming engineering—high-quality and packed with nostalgia, albeit at a hefty price. This console offers a unique and satisfying experience for any NES fan, despite the challenges of sourcing rare components.
Behind the Scenes: A Production Nightmare
Creating this video was a daunting task, filled with numerous challenges. From technical difficulties to multiple recording sessions, it was a journey fraught with obstacles. Bonus points if you can guess which year each part was recorded! But in the end, it was all worth it to bring you a comprehensive look at the TinyNES.
